Building a Horse Riding Arena Step by Step – What Does the Construction Process Look Like?

Building a Horse Riding Arena Step by Step – What Does the Construction Process Look Like?

A horse riding arena is the backbone of any professional equestrian centre. A facility of this kind allows training sessions to run throughout the year, competitions to be hosted, and a comfortable space for practice to be maintained regardless of the weather. Investing in a horse riding arena requires careful consideration of many aspects, however – from design to assembly. Below we explain how the entire process unfolds and what to pay close attention to at each stage.

How the Construction of a Horse Riding Arena Begins

The first stage is accurately defining requirements – both functional and spatial. A horse riding arena can serve a variety of purposes: it may function solely as a training hall, form part of a larger complex with stabling and ancillary facilities, or even serve as a venue for competitions. Already at the design stage it is worth establishing the anticipated number of horses and riders, the type of activity to be conducted, and the expected intensity of use.

With rider comfort and user safety in mind, the positioning of gates, access to natural light, and ventilation also matter greatly. The design of a stable with a riding arena should likewise take into account the orientation of the hall relative to the cardinal points, prevailing winds, and the character of the plot.

Year-Round or Seasonal? Which Arena to Choose?

Many investors wonder whether the better choice is a covered riding arena adapted for year-round use or a lighter seasonal structure. A year-round hall offers greater versatility – thanks to insulation, appropriate lighting, and durable finishing materials it can be used regardless of the time of year. This is particularly important for centres running regular training sessions and organising events.

A seasonal hall, on the other hand, suits locations where equestrian activity is concentrated during the warmer months. Its construction is cheaper and faster, but it comes with operational limitations. If flexibility and year-round use of the facility are priorities, a solid steel structure is well worth considering.

What Dimensions Should a Horse Riding Hall Have?

A horse riding hall must above all be matched to the type of activities to be conducted – show-jumping trainers have different requirements from centres offering leisure riding.

Standard dimensions for a covered riding arena for commercial or sporting use:

  • 20 x 40 m – the absolute minimum for learning to ride and recreational use,
  • 20 x 60 m – recommended for sports clubs and professional training,
  • 25–30 x 70 m or larger – for hosting competitions and group training sessions.

The height of the hall is equally important – a structure that is too low will restrict training possibilities, particularly in show-jumping disciplines. It is generally accepted that the minimum clear height is 4.5–6 metres to the underside of the structure, and in the case of show jumping – even more.

Steel Structure Production – Preparing the Arena for Assembly

Once the design work is complete, the production stage begins. Every element of the steel structure is manufactured in accordance with the technical documentation and the investor’s requirements. Appropriate materials are selected – trapezoidal sheet cladding, sandwich panels, roof rooflights – as well as components that increase the durability of the hall and its resistance to weather conditions.

Everything is planned so that assembly proceeds smoothly. A key advantage of steel structures is their modularity and the ability to be rapidly erected on site without the need for time-consuming construction work.

Assembly of the Horse Riding Arena – Efficient On-Site Execution

Assembly of a horse riding arena takes place in several stages. First, the foundations and the bearing of the load-bearing structure are prepared. The wall elements and roof cladding are then installed. Finally, entrance gates, rooflights, and ventilation systems are fitted. Depending on the location, the work is adapted to the terrain conditions and logistical constraints.

It is important that the assembly team has experience with this type of project – only then can timely completion and conformity with the design be assured. Completion time depends on the size of the facility and its specification, but with good organisation assembly can be completed within just a few weeks.

Handover of the Hall – What Is Checked After Works Are Complete?

At the end of the entire process comes the technical handover. The stability of the structure is checked, as is the weathertightness of the building and the operation of key installations. The functionality of the gates, access to the arena and ancillary areas, and the quality of the finish in accordance with the design documentation are all verified. This is a crucial moment that gives the investor confidence that the facility is ready for safe use – both for day-to-day work with horses and for the organisation of equestrian events.

A Horse Riding Arena Tailored to Your Needs

Every horse riding arena should be designed with its actual application in mind. Well-chosen dimensions, carefully considered structural solutions, and efficient assembly are the foundation of an investment that will serve for years to come. When investing in equestrian halls, it is well worth prioritising robustness, functionality, and proven structural solutions.
